Our Team

Michael K Pemberton

(CEO & Co- Founder)

Michael Pemberton is a Marine veteran, while serving he was able to truly understand the principles of perseverance and discipline which later became key to his entrepreneurship. He graduated from the University of the Virgin Islands with a degree in business administration and a minor in management, which completed an education almost entirely obtained in the territory (from preschool up through post-secondary education). While a student at UVI, his company, Ávera Tech became part of the very first cohort of the Research and Technology Park’s Accelerate Program which seeks to “build a pipeline of promising early-stage startup companies and provide them with the tools they need to grow and scale from the U.S. Virgin Islands.”. Shortly after Avera became one of just 36 startup companies to be admitted into the renowned Tech Beach Retreat (“TBR”) Accelerator Program. This Caribbean based program provides a nexus for the global tech ecosystem, connecting the best companies and minds in the world with undiscovered talent and opportunities. TBR was founded in part by the DMZ- a global incubator for tech startups around the world, and the IDR Lab- the innovation laboratory of the Inter- American Development Bank Group. The foundations of our company are one such that we are always able to maintain firsthand knowledge of the needs of the Caribbean which means that we can quickly fill gaps where the people may urgently require a tech solution and they do not always have to lean on the government which may already be burdened by other infrastructure requisites.
Now, not only was Ávera established by talent which was born, raised and educated in the Caribbean, it was being supported by resources also within the Caribbean, all but ensuring that the company would maintain its strong Caribbean roots. His goal is to use Avera’s to innovate the economy within the Caribbean and improve the standard of living in the region. We plan to empower private citizens to decrease reliance on local governments through the use of technology and also make the Caribbean the golden standard in global technological efforts.

Aliyah Bryan

(Director of Operations- Co-Founder)

Aliyah claims to have “stumbled” upon the technology industry. After applying to an internship working with a local tech startup in the Atlanta area, she was exposed to the fundamental aspects of starting and running a successful technology startup. Following several months of working under the company’s CFO, Aliyah saw the endless opportunity that could be seized just by identifying a need and creating a solution. She realized that you didn’t have to be the smartest person or have an extensive background in tech. Rather, all you needed was one single great idea and an unstoppable team that she could lean on for support. While Aliyah’s liberal arts education introduced her to technology and the world of entrepreneurship, her time spent on capitol hill led her to better understand the needs of the government and its people. These cumulative experiences are what prompted Aliyah to reflect on the type of life that she wished to pursue and the change that she could catalyze in the Virgin Islands and maybe even the world. This is how Avera was born. During her senior year at Agnes Scott, Aliyah co-founded Avera as an opportunity to stimulate growth not just in the Virgin Islands but across the Caribbean region. She aspires to play a role in establishing economic independence in the Caribbean both on a regional and personal level.
